It undermines self confidence and changes the way we view the world.
People diagnosed with major depression show a combination of symptoms
that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat, and enjoy
once pleasurable activities. Depression
is very common. Embarrassment and shame at "being weak" is the most
common reason for not seeking help. Depression is a medical illness and
is not due to a weak personality. Depression
interferes with everyday functioning and causes pain and suffering, not
only to those who are ill, but also to family and friends. Serious
depression can destroy family life and ruin the life of the individual
who is depressed. Depression starts at any age (mean age 27). Worldwide,
it accounts for 12 per cent of all disability. The majority of suicides
are due to depression. Depression interferes with everyday functioning
and causes pain and suffering, not only to those who are ill, but also
to family and friends. Serious depression can destroy family life and
ruin the life of the individual who is depressed. Depression
will soon be the leading disease burden to the economy in the western
world, on par with heart disease. In any given year, 10 percent of the
population suffers from a depression. Depression is also one of the
largest markets in the world: $20 billion market and growing rapidly
for many reasons including: better diagnosis and treatment, its
correlation to the aging population and, perhaps, the greater
